The Foolishness of Racism in this Election

Posted by honestpoet on October 7, 2008

Thanks to Deanie Mills at TPM for bringing this video to my attention, of Richard Trunka, President of the AFL-CIO, addressing the problem of racism being used against Barack Obama in this election. He points out the illogic of working-class folk voting for McCain, who will do nothing to help their struggling families. It’s lovely to behold.

The man does make a point, doesn’t he? I hope the workers are listening.

He must surely be one of the very few who can speak across the barrier between college grads and working poor white people. It’s a rare skill, as you know from your previous habitat.
By the way, I’m reading a tremendous book called Deer Hunting With Jesus (the subtitle being something like Dispatches from America’s Culture Wars). It’s about that barrier.

I hope that it comes down, soon. We’re all Americans, we all have a stake in the success or failure of our country, and to continue to try to divide us for political gain seems like a huge sin.
